Living History Experience

Dear Teachers and Educators,

Thank you for considering the Mount Prospect Historical Society’s original one-room school for your living history experience. Central School is conveniently located on the Historical Society campus in downtown Mount Prospect. A variety of unique experiences and tours, rich in local history, are offered to fit your needs and meet Common Core State Standards.

The museum campus is open and available for the Living History Experience and/or school tours Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Payment is due, prior to your scheduled date, by credit card, cash, or check (made payable to Mount Prospect Historical Society).  The following options are offered:

Central School Historic Classroom Experience and Blacksmith Exhibit (two hours): $5.00 per student

Morning Session (10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
Afternoon Session (1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.)

Abridged Central School Historic Classroom Experience, Blacksmith Exhibit, and Dietrich Friedrichs House Museum Tour (two hours): $5.00 per student

Morning Session (10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
Afternoon Session (1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.)

Central School Tour without classroom experience (half hour): $3.00 per student

Morning Session (10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
Afternoon Session (1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.)

Dietrich-Friedrichs House Tour with Central School Tour (one hour): $5.00 per student

Morning Session (10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
Afternoon Session (1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.)

For all programs, teachers, aides, and chaperones may participate free of charge. We recommend bringing one adult chaperone for every 10 students. Adults are encouraged to be actively engaged in the experience.

Classroom experience and tours are led by trained docents and/or the Historical Society staff.

Under the direction of a Schoolmarm or Master, students will experience what learning was like in a one-room multi-aged classroom straight out of the past. Experience reading, writing, and arithmetic lessons as they were taught to past school-aged children of Mount Prospect. Find out what happened if a student misbehaved. And, take a recess break to play back-to-basics games of a by-gone era. This two hour experience is aligned with Common Core State Standards.

The Dietrich Friedrichs House Museum was the 13th house built in Mount Prospect (1906) and the interior displays life in 1917, the year Mount Prospect was incorporated.

Photos and videos are periodically taken of people participating in Mount Prospect Historical Society programs and activities. All persons registering for programs/activities thereby agree that any photograph or videotape taken by the Society may be used for promotional purposes including its electronic media, videotapes, brochures, flyers and other publications without additional prior notice or permission and without compensation to the participant.

Reservations are taken on a first come, first served basis. To book your visit, please call the Historical Society at (847) 392-9006 (Tuesday through Thursday) or click here to use the on-line registration form. Upon booking, you will receive a confirmation with specific information about your program.

We look forward to your visit! Please let us know if you have any questions or if there is something else we can assist you with in bringing local history into your classroom.

Sincerely,
The Mount Prospect Historical Society Staff
