Commemorative Design: One of Mount Prospect’s Favorite Hang-Outs – Photo’s Hot Dogs

The Mount Prospect Historical Society has designed another in its series of shirts commemorating famous local restaurants.

Photo’s Hot Dogs, the popular creation of Jim Photopoulos, opened in the then-new commercial strip at the intersection of Wolf and Kensington Roads in 1989 and drew in crowds of all ages for 30 years.

Families flocked there, as did harried birthday party hosts and hostesses with their rowdy “charges”, adult and youth sports teams, middle and high school friends and even college students home on breaks.

Many still fondly remember the vintage red International Harvester ambulance adorned with a large wooden hot dog on top which made deliveries for years and the vintage car shows they held in their parking lot.

But most of all, they remember the delicious soft-serve ice cream, hot dogs, gyros, burgers and even the rather short-lived (but still longed-after) broasted chicken.

“This is a pre-order sale and all orders must be placed by May 7, 2023 because we would like to have them available as Father’s Day gifts,” said Amanda Marcus, the Society’s Office Manager. “The shirt — which is only available in white — will sell for $28 for sizes S-XL and $32 for 2XL+.”

Randhurst Commemorative T-Shirts On Sale Now!

Randhurst Shopping Center, a shopping landmark in Chicago’s northwestern suburbs, opened its doors to an excited public 60 years ago — on August 16, 1962 — and while the original structure no longer stands, Randhurst continues to serve the shopping public and fond memories of the original Randhurst experience remain.

“The mall may no longer be “all under one roof,” but memories of Randhurst remain sheltered in our hearts and memories,” stated Emily Dattilo, Director of the Mount Prospect Historical Society. “Everyone here has a memory of Randhurst, from playing on the sculptures, to ordering lunch at The Picnic, to shopping for Back to School clothes and supplies.”

The Mount Prospect Historical Society is commemorating this momentous anniversary with a new t-shirt that features several of the shopping center’s iconic features. Shirts come in red, blue or green.

“This is a pre-order sale and all orders must be placed by June 30, 2022” said Amanda Marcus, the Society’s Office Manager. “The shirt will sell for $28 for sizes S-XL and $30 for 2XL+.”

“We hope to ship the shirts by the end of July, but supply shortages may extend delivery into August. We thank you for your understanding,” Marcus continued.

“Lost But Not Forgotten” t-shirt

Businesses helped make Mount Prospect flourish in its early days and many are still some of the most fondly remembered places in town. Our new shirt celebrates some of those businesses and shopping centers that will always be cherished and never forgotten.

This is a preorder sale, orders are expected to ship mid-March, 2022. $28 for sizes S-XL, $30 for 2XL. Contact us  for sizes larger than 2XL.

Make it a bundle by adding the book “Lost Mount Prospect,” written by our former Director Gavin Kleespies.

*This shirt only displays a small number of influential local businesses. We do not intend to imply that these businesses were the most important in Mount Prospect’s history, that we are endorsing the products, services, or views of these organizations, or that this list is a complete listing of businesses that have been important in Mount Prospect.*
