If you have been intending to travel to the Museum of Science and Industry to see the recently renovated German U-505 submarine exhibit; are interested in taking ballroom dance lessons with your sweetie; enjoy curling up in front of an exciting war movie; or would enjoy having a lovely handmade quilt to hang on your wall or adorn that new grandchild’s crib, you will want to purchase a ticket for the Mount Prospect Historical Society raffle being held in conjunction with its “Celebrate the End of the War in Europe” dinner on April 18.  One of the prize packages even includes Swiss products, including a rustic men’s “Swiss Legend” watch.

The winner need not be present to win, so even if you can’t attend the dinner, you could win a great prize of your choosing because the Society’s website allows purchasers to buy their tickets to be entered to win specific prizes which range in value from $55 to $211.

Raffle tickets are available for $10 each or six for $50 through PayPal at then end of this post, on our purchase page or at the museum, 101 S. Maple St., Mount Prospect.  They will also be available at the April 18 “Celebrate the End of the War in Europe” event.

If you are interested in attending the dinner, tickets are now on sale for the Society’s fourth annual “History in the Headlines” fundraiser at Rob Roy Golf Course clubhouse, 505 E. Camp McDonald Rd., Prospect Heights.

This year, the Society will re-imagine both a fancy Officer’s Mess-style prime rib dinner and a “Returning Heroes” pizza and salad meal.  As in last year’s “An Evening at Chicago’s 1893 Columbian Exposition” dinner, the 2013 “Dinner at the Lincoln White House” and the 2012 “An Evening Aboard the H.M.S. Titanic” event, patrons are encouraged to attend in period dress, and will again have the choice of two ticket options:

The $25 “Returning Heroes Meal” menu includes a array of three pizzas and a large family-style salad on each table.  GIs returning from service in Italy were the ones who brought this Italian treat back to the United States in a big way, opening pizzerias on their return home.

The $75 “Officer’s Mess Dining” menu includes a “Victory Garden” tossed salad with French dressing, prime rib, Au Gratin potatoes, green beans and glazed baby carrots, all of which are historically-appropriate.

The festivities will begin at 6 p.m., with a cash bar, and both meals will be catered by Rob Roy’s 10th Hole Bar and Grill of Prospect Heights.

After the meal, party-goers will be entertained by professional dancers provided by the Mt. Prospect Park District.  They will demonstrate the dances that were popular during the War and during the years that followed.  After the demonstration, the professionals will be happy to teach a 1940s dance to anyone who is interested.

Dinner tickets are limited and may be reserved individually or in tables of ten.  For more information, log onto www.mtphist.org or phone 847-392-9006, Tuesday through Friday during office hours.

All of the proceeds from this event will benefit the Mount Prospect Historical Society’s Operating Fund.
