NEW MOUNT PROSPECT PICTORAL HISTORY BOOK PUBLISHED
A
pictorial history of Mount Prospect is available through the Mount
Prospect Historical Society, local bookstores and Busse Automotive,
Keefer’s Pharmacy, and Neat and Cool Gifts. Entitled "Images
of America: Mount Prospect," the book was written by Gavin W.
Kleespies, executive director of the Society, and Jean Powley Murphy,
local columnist and author.
A "must have" for anyone with an interest in local history, this book provides photographs and historical tidbits about many of the people, businesses and organizations that have helped shape Mount Prospect over the past 100 years.
Published by Arcadia Publishing, the book features 200 captioned images on 128 pages. Interestingly, most of the photos included have never been published before, according to Kleespies.
"We are very excited about our partnership with Arcadia because, they are one of the leading publishers of local and regional history books in America" he explains. The book is also available on Amazon.com For more information, contact the Mount Prospect Historical Society at 847/392-9006.
Newspaper Microfilming
In cooperation and association with the Mount Prospect Public Library, local area newspapers have been microfilmed for preservation, storage, and research purposes. Many area newspapers do not maintain this source of research material and the combined efforts of the Library and the Society offers the community an additional avenue for research. This is an ongoing program which will be continued.
Memorial Book: LET US NEVER FORGET ...
In 1996, the Mount Prospect Historical Society initiated a unique new program to respond to requests by the public for a way to memorialize and honor the deceased. Rather than covering museum surfaces with plaques which record nothing more than names and dates, the Society has chosen to offer a memorial book which will contain one-page personal stories about the people for whom the memorials have been requested. Each memorial will be enhanced with a photo of the person being remembered. In order to have someone included in the book, a cumulative total of $50 in donations in the deceased's name must be received from any number of sources. OUR HOPE is that through this program the Society will be able to not only honor the deceased, but also preserve their unique part of the past for future genealogists, house researchers and historic researchers. All of us are making history every day and future generations will be just as interested in learning about us as we are currently interested in learning about those who preceded us. ACCURACY IS PARAMOUNT, however, in any historic recordkeeping. Therefore, information for the memorial book will only be accepted from the family of the deceased through a standard questionnaire, available from area funeral directors, and the Historical Society and the Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists. Photos solicited will be returned. Unlike personal data, donations will gratefully be accepted from any source. IF YOU WOULD LIKE to have your loved one's contributions, achievements and activities recorded for posterity, request that donations made in his or her memory be made to the Mount Prospect Historical Society and obtain a questionnaire from the Society or your funeral director. You can even choose to have the funds which are received from your family and friends allocated to a particular fund or activity within the Society for which you or the deceased have a special interest. In addition, the family will receive a weekly or monthly (depending on volume) summary of donors in your loved one's name so that personal notes can be written.
The Memorial Book Program has provided an appropriate place for memorials to deceased members of the community, providing a fitting tribute to the person, and providing future historians with a wealth of information about the person which might otherwise be lost. Brochures giving details about the program, as well as questionnaires to be filled out by a member of the family (in the interest of accuracy), have been made available from all area funeral directors and the Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists, as well as from the Society. This program is chaired by Jean Murphy, and assisted by Pam Warchol and Jo Newport-Clark. To date funds have been established for:
- Mrs. Both
- C. Paul Carlstedt
- James Thomas Crosley
- Lucille M. Gronert
- Mr. Hanck
- Jack Keefer
- Melvin E. Krumrey
- Father Robert Loftus
- Lillian Monroe
- Rev. James Birr Muckle
- Irene Edna Eichman Weary
This program will continue as an ongoing community service by the Society. (If you would like, you can view the contents of the Memorial Book at the Dietrich Friedrichs House Muse
